Hasina made the call on Sunday in an email to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the global custodian for domain names and systems, while marking International Mother Language day promoting the national tongue.

“It (Hasina’s email) was a formal proposal to the global internet body to include Bengali for a greater recognition of the language in the world community,” Hasina’s press secretary, Abul Kalam Azad, said.

Hasina hoped the relevant Internet authority would accept the proposal to facilitate some 300 million Bengalis, half of them living in Bangladesh.
